4 Myths About Dental Implants

TeamDental Implants

At Barkoff Dental, we create healthy smiles for a lifetime. This is why when a patient is missing teeth, we recommend dental implants. Unlike dentures and bridges, dental implants are made to last a lifetime and they are the best solution for replicating the function and appearance of natural teeth. If you're considering implants, don't be swayed by the misinformation you find online. In this post, we'll dispel some of the most common myths about dental implants.

Getting Dental Implants Is Painful

Even if you're not squeamish about medical procedures, the thought of having dental implants placed in your jawbone can make you feel a little bit nervous. We certainly understand that, but rest assured, the process of getting implants might be uncomfortable, but we do everything in our power to make sure it's never painful.

Before we start working on your mouth, we'll use local anesthesia to completely numb the area where we're working. After we've placed your implants, it's not uncommon to experience slight swelling and tenderness for a few days, but any discomfort is mild and can usually be resolved with over-the-counter pain relievers.

I'm Too Young for Dental Implants

Some patients think dental implants and dentures are for their parents and grandparents, not for them. The truth is, if you're an adult and otherwise healthy, you are a good candidate for dental implants as long as you have adequate jawbone to support them. (And even if you don't, we can perform bone grafting procedures to stimulate bone growth.) Implants are a viable option for anyone who is missing teeth. And because they last a lifetime with proper care, they are a particularly good option for young patients because you'll never need to worry about having to replace them.

I Can't Afford Dental Implants

The truth is, dental implants are expensive––in fact, they are one of the most specialized procedures dentists offer. Bridges and dentures can be, at times, more affordable. That said, bridges and dentures will need to be replaced periodically; dental implants almost never need replacement. When you factor in the maintenance and replacement cost for bridges and dentures, you usually end up coming out ahead in the long-run when you choose dental implants over other options.

Dental Implants Compromise Long-Term Health

The internet is full of horror stories about dental implants, but keep in mind that the procedure has a 98% rate––most patients are happy with their results. A common myth is that dental implants cause chronic migraines and tension headaches because of their placement in the jaw. In the decades since dental implants became a preferred option for replacing missing teeth, no evidence has emerged to prove that they are linked to headaches.

The dental implant procedure has the same risks as any other surgery: infection, nerve damage (which is usually temporary), and injury to the surrounding structures. When dental implants fail, it can be painful and emotionally difficult, but the process we use at Barkoff Dental minimizes this risk.
